What are Pot Odds in Poker
Pot odds are the ratio of what you risk to what you can win from the pot. Put another way: they tell you what percentage of the time you need to win the hand for a call to be profitable. They're the other half of every calling decision —the first half is your equity.
An example with real numbers. There's $100 in the pot and your opponent bets $50. To call you put in $50 and you're playing to win a $200 pot ($100 + their $50 + your $50). Your $50 call into a final $200 pot means you need to win at least 25% of the time to break even in the long run ($50 ÷ $200 = 0.25).
There's the decision: if your flush draw has ~36% equity to get there, calling is clearly profitable, because you win more than the 25% minimum the pot demands. If you only had 18% equity, calling would lose money long-term even if you "feel like" seeing the next card. Pot odds turn that feeling into a concrete threshold: I need to win X% — do I or don't I?
So you don't have to do the math in your head mid-hand, the pot odds calculator gives you the percentage instantly, free and with no account needed.
